Miley downplays heated exchange with Farrell: 'We're all grown men in here'
Emotions were running high in the Boston Red Sox dugout following another poor start.
Red Sox left-hander Wade Miley allowed five runs off nine hits to the Baltimore Orioles - including a season-high three home runs - and was replaced by Steven Wright to begin the fifth inning.
Upon his arrival to the dugout at the end of the fourth, manager John Farrell informed Miley, who had thrown just 69 pitches, that his outing was finished. The decision did not appear to sit well with the pitcher.
Following the heated exchange, Miley proceeded to the clubhouse with his manager behind him.
After trailing 4-0 heading into the fourth inning, the Red Sox scored three runs to cut the lead to one. Miley responded by retiring the first two batters before giving up a solo home run to give the Orioles a 5-3 lead.
Baltimore went on to the 6-5 victory, handing the Red Sox their third straight loss, putting Boston seven games back of the division-leading New York Yankees.
Farrell said following the game that Miley was upset about being taken out and that the two have talked since.
"He’s a competitor," Farrell told reporters. "You work four days for your start. He doesn't want to come out of the ballgame. I fully respect that. I thought he had good stuff overall, but where we were on the scoreboard, I felt like we needed a change of contrast, a change of style, and made a move at that point after four innings."
Miley also did his best to downplay the incident.
"We're all grown men here," Miley said. "We talked. He's competing from his end of it. I'm competing on my end of it. It's over."
