Tim Duncan to Steve Kerr after Warriors' title: 'It's that easy, huh?'
"It's that easy, huh?"
That was the question half-jokingly posed to Steve Kerr by former teammate Tim Duncan in a congratulatory text after the Golden State Warriors secured an NBA championship in Kerr's first year on the job.
Kerr reflected on just how easy - or rather, how fortunate - his debut season as a head coach was while addressing Bay Area media Thursday, a day ahead of the Warriors' championship parade.
"It's ironic, but the unexpected thing was that everything went exactly as we hoped," Kerr said of a dominant, 67-win season that saw the Warriors remain relatively health and on track, despite his decisions to move veterans Andre Iguodala and David Lee to the bench in favor of youngsters Harrison Barnes and Draymond Green.
"All this stuff that you kind of hope can actually unfold and happen and use as a strength instead of a dividing force, it actually happened," Kerr said. "That was, as I said, ironically, sort of the most unexpected thing, that things would unfold perfectly."
While Kerr's Warriors certainly ran into their fair share of luck, as any champion does, and he was handed the reins of a team stocked with talented players who were ready to buy in, his own contributions cannot be denied.
Kerr won five titles as a player with Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls and Duncan's Spurs. Coaching the Warriors, he created a free-flowing offense built upon movement and space, and improved an already stout defense, with assistants Alvin Gentry and Ron Adams helping him lead the most dominant two-way team in recent memory.
With the Warriors expected to bring back largely the same team that ransacked the league, he'll certainly have the opportunity to go 2-for-2 in his second year on the job, provided the same type of good fortune.
But first, a parade.
