Karl-Anthony Towns poured water as cold as a Minnesota winter on a Monday report that said the Timberwolves promised him he'd be taken first overall at Thursday's NBA Draft.
Actually, he poured ice cream on it.
"If I had a promise I would go start eating ice cream and getting fat," Towns told Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press. "There is absolutely no promise at all."
That sort of wording from a high-level athlete might make some team executives cringe, but Krawczynski added Towns' remark was tongue-in-cheek.
Towns, who's emerged as the closest thing to a consensus No. 1 pick in this draft, worked out for the Wolves over the weekend, the only NBA team for which he's done so. On Monday, it was reported the Timberwolves told the Kentucky power forward he'll be selected first.
Beyond his ice cream comment, Towns said if Minnesota takes him, he would be honored to get on-the-job-training from Kevin Garnett.
"To maybe possibly even play with him would be a great experience if I’m given the opportunity, the privilege and the honor," Towns said.
The 6-foot-11, 250-pound Towns averaged 10.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, and 1.1 assists with the Wildcats last season. The 19-year-old has the instincts of a shot-blocker and rim protector, but the athleticism and mobility to guard multiple positions.
