Report: Corey Brewer open to re-signing in Houston, seeking multi-year deal
After rehabbing his value by helping the Houston Rockets to the Western Conference Finals, swingman Corey Brewer is looking to cash in.
Brewer is open to re-signing with Houston, but his preference is to secure a multi-year deal, reports Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports.
The Rockets landed Brewer in a mid-season deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and he solidified the Rockets' rotation as their Sixth Man. He is an inconsistent scorer and an unreliable shooter, but his hustle and energy made him a useful sparkplug off the bench.
Most importantly, Brewer's tenacity, activity and length on defense fit seamlessly into Houston's scheme. His ability to effectively guard multiple positions helped Houston to an eighth-ranked defense on the season.
Brewer's biggest contribution came during the Western Conference semifinals. With their season on the line, Brewer came alive against the Los Angeles Clippers, scoring 14 points in the second half as part of a 19-point comeback in Game 6. The Rockets went on to defeat the shell-shocked Clippers in seven games.
Brewer has a player option for $4.9 million for next season and is likely due for a raise. The 29-year-old swingman should draw plenty of interest as a mid-level exception target for most championship contenders.
On the year, Brewer averaged 11.5 points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 26.1 minutes per game between 81 games in Houston and Minnesota.
