Maybe Vivek Ranadive is flexible, and the Sacramento Kings can play Connect Four-on-five.
The Kings have requested a meeting with point guard Rajon Rondo, according to sources for ESPN.
It was reported last week that the two sides had mutual interest, and forward Rudy Gay, a friend of Rondo, was reportedly urging the team to sign the free agent. Gay had been in the rumor mill as a potential trade candidate, too, so it's unclear how seriously his recommendation will be taken
Rondo played in 68 games last year, splitting time with the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks. His tenure with the Mavericks was up-and-down to say the least, with the Mavericks ultimately admitting that while the trade that brought him there was a "risk worth taking," it ultimately didn't work out. There's also the matter of Charlie Villanueva allegedly beating Rondo at Connect Four, which stands to ruin the latter's reputation and suppress his market.
Rondo averaged 9.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.5 assists while with Dallas, playing out the latter part of the season and playoffs with a back injury. He and the Mavericks "mutually agreed to part ways" this offseason, and his unceremonious exit likely hurt the demand for his services.
Rondo is expected to sign a one-year contract as a result, looking to rehabilitate his value wherever he signs and re-enter the market in a more fortuitous cap environment in 2016. Along with the Kings, the Los Angeles Lakers were once believed to be interested, but things have been quiet on that front since the team drafted a point guard second overall.
