Jeremy Lin's basketball career has been something right out of Hollywood, so it was ironic to watch him falter in L.A.
Lin's one-year tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers was largely a failure, with the Harvard product struggling to find consistent footing. The Lakers still landed a first-round pick for taking his contract on, and Lin was hardly the reason their season was a disaster, but it's little surprise there isn't much talk of Line re-signing.
The Lakers expressed some interest in Lin early Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Daily News, but both sides are "lukewarm" on the idea. Meanwhile, Lin has heard from the Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs, and Los Angeles Clippers.
No team is going to break the bank for Lin, particularly early in the free agent process, but there's a good reason he has so many teams kicking the tires. After averaging $8.4 million in salary over the last three years, Lin could come at a relative discount this summer with his career momentum stalled.
Lin averaged 11.2 points and 4.6 assists this season, shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and 36.9 percent from outside. A savvy pick-and-roll operator with disruptive length, if not the requisite athleticism, on defense, Lin would be a quality backup for a contender or a low-end starter for a team with bigger holes.
He may also be amenable to a short-term deal in order to recoup his value before the salary cap increases, something that could ingratiate him to teams with big plans for 2016 and 2017.
