The Washington Wizards are hoping to retain Paul Pierce without forfeiting future flexibility.
The Wizards have offered Pierce a two-year deal worth $6.6 million next season, with a player option for 2016-17, Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports reports.
Pierce has been linked to the Boston Celtics, Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers this summer. Out of the three, the Wizards represent his best shot at earning a fair salary while remaining in championship contention.
Pierce is 37, but he remains a highly productive player. In his first season with Washington, he posted regular-season averages of 11.9 points and four rebounds in 26.2 minutes.
But Pierce's star shone brightest in the Wizards' valiant postseason run. The grizzled veteran stepped up his averages to 14.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 29.8 minutes per game, while shooting 52.4 percent from deep. That included a smattering of buzzer-beaters, including this shot to beat the Atlanta Hawks in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
