After making their first splash in 2015 free agency by agreeing to a four-year deal with shooting guard Monta Ellis on Thursday, the Indiana Pacers went under the radar for a smaller move.
The Pacers have come to terms on a three-year, $12-million deal with power forward Lavoy Allen, according to Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports.
Allen is about as unsexy as free-agent signings get, but he provided very serviceable minutes off the Pacers' bench at both power forward and center last season, averaging five points and 5.1 rebounds (10.6 and 10.9 per 36 minutes) in 63 games, with a league-average PER.
Given that power forward David West has opted for free agency, the Pacers are seeking out deals for incumbent starting center Roy Hibbert, and first-round draft pick Myles Turner is seen as more of a long-term project, the 26-year-old Allen could be in line for a significant minutes bump next season.
Locking him up was a necessary step towards shoring up what's currently looking like a pretty threadbare frontcourt, and with reserve bigs like Aron Baynes and Alexis Ajinca fetching $20 million this offseason, the dollar amount looks like fair market value.
