Swingman Corey Brewer made it clear following the Houston Rockets' five-game Western Conference Final defeat at the hands of the Golden State Warriors that he wanted to remain with the Rockets for the foreseeable future.
It appears that will indeed be the case, as the unrestricted free agent has agreed to a three-year, $24-million deal to remain with the team, Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reports.
The deal reportedly has no player or team options.
Brewer had the opportunity to make more money by signing with the Sacramento Kings, but ultimately elected to turn them down for a lesser offer with Houston, ESPN's Marc Stein reports.
The Rockets acquired Brewer from the Minnesota Timberwolves at the end of last year in a three-team trade that also involved the Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 11.9 points and 3.6 rebounds following the move, similar numbers to what he was producing in Minnesota.
Brewer's true value came on the defensive end - Houston allowed 104 points per 100 possessions when he was on the sidelines, compared to just 99.8 when he saw the floor - using his length on the perimeter to aggravate opposing wings. Brewer joining a unit that featured Trevor Ariza and eventually Josh Smith made the Rockets a fearsome defensive squad that finished the season ranked sixth in the league in efficiency on that end (100.5).
Just don't count on Brewer to hit you many outside shots, as the 29-year-old only nailed 42.9 percent of his field goal attempts with a miserable 28.4 3-point percentage.
The Knicks were also reportedly interested in signing Brewer, although their need at shooting guard became less glaring once Arron Afflalo agreed to a two-year, $16-million deal.
James Harden is the Rockets' man at the 2-spot, but Brewer's ability to play multiple positions makes him an invaluable asset that head coach Kevin McHale shouldn't have a problem finding continued minutes for.
Over the course of his eight-year career, Brewer has averaged 10.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals in 547 games.
