The Orlando Magic, already flush with youth and potential, have spiced up their backcourt by adding veteran C.J. Watson to the rotation.
The Magic reached an agreement with the point guard on a three-year, $15-million deal Saturday, Marc Spears of Yahoo Sports reports. The third year of Watson's deal is partially guaranteed, reports Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today.
The 31-year-old played for the Indiana Pacers last season, averaging 10 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists while shuffling in and out of the starting lineup during George Hill's absence.
Watson has the versatility to play both guard positions, but his height (6-foot-2) is best suited for checking point guards.
Watson's chief skill is his 3-point shot. Over the last five seasons, he's connected on 39.4 percent of his 3-point tries on 2.5 attempts per game. In signing with Orlando, Watson can help alleviate the dearth of shooting between Victor Oladipo and Elfrid Payton.
A three-year deal should encompass the remaining years of Watson's prime. He should age gracefully, though, as his game has never been particularly reliant on athleticism. All the Magic need is for Watson to provide steady ball-handling, while posing as a strong spot-up threat.
