Papelbon tells Phillies to 'you-know-what or get off the pot' regarding trade

Jonathan Papelbon is, admittedly, a little tired of waiting for the Philadelphia Phillies to trade him to a contender.

When broached Monday in Cincinnati about his future in Philadelphia, the 34-year-old closer reiterated his desire to be moved ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, repeatedly telling reporters the Phillies need to "you-know-what or get off the pot."

Frustration evident, Papelbon is making it known that he doesn't want to be in Philadelphia.

"If it was up to me, I'd have been gone a long time ago," he said, before pointing out that it's up to him.

Papelbon, the club's lone representative at the 86th All-Star Game, said in April he'd be "disappointed" if he wasn't traded and the Phillies continued to struggle.

Though the six-time All-Star wields a partial no-trade clause, his comments suggest he'd happily waive it to go to a contender after watching the Phillies stumble to a 29-62 record thus far.

Nevertheless, Papelpon isn't going to mail it in just because he hasn't been dealt. He'll be a professional about it, and whatever happens, happens.

"If it still is Philly, I won't be happy. But I'm not going to let it affect how I prepare," he said. "I've got to play for myself, for my career and my stats. I'm not going to just throw it in."

Despite his club's struggles in 2015, Papelbon owns a sterling 1.60 ERA (238 ERA+) with a 0.98 WHIP over 32 appearances, collecting 14 saves in as many chances while notching 35 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings. If Papelbon finishes another 19 games this season, meanwhile, his $13-million option for 2016 will automatically vest.
