LeBron James showed up in Las Vegas on Friday to help cheer on the summer league version of his Cleveland Cavaliers with some interesting company.
Former Kansas center and Russian Olympic bronze medalist Sasha Kaun was alongside James, Cavaliers head coach David Blatt, and assistant coach Tyronn Lue as the Cavs topped the Minnesota Timberwolves. That's an intriguing development as the Cavs look to fill out their roster on the cheap.
Kaun was selected 56th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft, and his draft rights have since come into the Cavs' possession. The five-time international VTB United League champion has made it clear that he's not interested in continuing to play in Russia, and he knows Blatt well from Blatt's time as head coach of the Russian national team.
While other NBA teams have reportedly registered interest in Kaun, the Cavs own his rights. A 30-year-old who averaged 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in Russia may not scream "marquee addition." However, Kaun also shot 68 percent, stands 6-foot-11 and 250 pounds, and could come cheap - an important consideration with the Cavs closing in on a historic luxury-tax bill.
James, meanwhile, was looking quite relaxed and casual Friday, sporting a customized Cleveland Indians jersey with "King James" across the back. Generally, personalized jerseys are a minor jersey foul for an adult - would a Corey Kluber or Trevor Bauer jersey be so bad? - but considering it's James and the jersey was probably free, the four-time MVP gets a pass.
