Angels' Freese fractures index finger on HBP, expects to miss about 3 weeks

Los Angeles Angels third baseman David Freese is headed to the disabled list with a broken right index finger after getting hit by a pitch during Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins.

Freese exited the contest after being struck on the hand by a Mike Pelfrey fastball in the fourth inning and X-rays later revealed the non-displaced fracture. He'll wear a splint for at least two weeks before another X-ray will determine how quickly he can return.

"You want to be in the lineup," Freese said after the Angels' 5-2 win. "I'll just be a good cheerleader, come in wearing a big smile and be ready to go when I'm ready."

Freese, who missed 16 games with a similar injury last season, said he's hoping to return in about three weeks.

The 32-year-old has 11 homers and 43 RBIs in 90 games, but he's putting up career lows in both batting average (.241) and on-base percentage (.308).

The Angels are expected to recall Kyle Kubitza to replace Freese, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, but could also promote top prospect Kaleb Cowart, who's batting .336/.415/.541 for Triple-A Salt Lake.
