The Pittsburgh Penguins signed free agent Eric Fehr to a three-year, $6-million contract, general manager Jim Rutherford announced Tuesday.
The 29-year-old was drafted 18th overall by the Washington Capitals in 2003, with whom he played all but 35 of his 454 career games, with a brief stint with the Winnipeg Jets also on his resume.
Last season, Fehr recorded 19 goals - two short of his career high - while chipping in 14 assists and 142 shots.
"Fehr is comfortable as a two position player," Rutherford said, citing an ability to play center or wing. "He could definitely jump up to the top-six if the situation presented itself."
Fehr underwent elbow surgery June 3 with an expected recovery time of four to six months, meaning he may not make his Penguins debut until December.
The signing, alongside the trade for Nick Bonino, helps the team's depth while allocating dollars to potentially more effective players.
