Seahawks haven't given up on extending All-Pro linebacker Wagner
The Seattle Seahawks haven't forgotten about linebacker Bobby Wagner.
Despite using a sizable chunk of its salary cap on a new four-year contract for quarterback Russell Wilson, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said the team is working hard to get an extension done with Wagner as well.
"We're still working, got big stuff to do today," Carroll told reporters Friday. "We're still working. We're not finished, in case you were wondering.
"We're on it. Whoever thought that we were done with that thing that was not right. We're on it and we’re going to keep competing to get that done. We have planned for this for a long time and nothing has changed in all that. Our guys are working at it by the hour here."
Wilson's cap number could complicate things, though. His agent, Mark Rodgers, said the quarterback received a $31-million signing bonus and a $700,000 base salary, which would put his cap number over $8 million, according to ESPN's John Clayton.
The Seahawks were hoping for a cap number in the $5-million range for Wilson and $3.5 million for Wagner, Clayton reports. That means the team may have to restructure a few other contracts before it can get a deal done with Wagner.
"It could be done, it could not be done. When I have something to sign than it will be done," Wagner said.
Asked if he has a deadline in mind for a new deal, Wagner replied, "Now. That's my deadline."
