The New York Knicks have snatched up one of the few quality big men remaining on the open market, agreeing to terms with center Kevin Seraphin on a one-year, $2.8-million deal, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.
A number of teams had previously been linked to the 25-year-old this offseason, including the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, and San Antonio Spurs.
The Washington Wizards, whom Seraphin spent the last four years competing with, were also reportedly in the mix to re-sign the unrestricted free agent.
In 326 career games, Seraphin has averaged 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds on 49.1 percent shooting.
This move may come as a surprise to some, as the Knicks hadn't previously been mentioned as a potential suitor, and Seraphin had also expressed his desire to be a starter on whichever team he joined.
"I definitely want a chance to be a starter," Seraphin told CSNWashington's J. Michael back in May. "I definitely want to be somewhere I have a chance to be a starter."
With the Knicks loading up their frontcourt this summer by signing Robin Lopez and working a sign-and-trade for Kyle O'Quinn, there may not be much of an opportunity for Seraphin to land a starter's role. It's comparable to the situation he found himself in with the Wizards, fighting for playing time with Nene, Marcin Gortat, Drew Gooden, and Kris Humphries.
Even so, in whatever minutes Seraphin is able to secure in the Big Apple, he'll be a reliable source of rebounds and points in the paint. On a one-year contract, the 6-foot-10 big allows himself to hit free agency once again in 2016, when the salary cap is projected to skyrocket.
