The New York Knicks have signed free agent Sasha Vujacic and 2014 second-round pick Thanasis Antetokounmpo, the team announced Friday.
The deal with Vujacic is reportedly a fully guaranteed, one-year, $1.4-million pact, which rolls the dice that his performance overseas since 2010-11 portends greater NBA success this time around.
Save for a two-game stint with the Los Angeles Clippers in 2013-14, Vujacic has played internationally for the last four seasons. Phil Jackson and head coach Derek Fisher may see Vujacic's familiarity with the triangle offense from his Los Angeles Lakers days as an asset, and he should provide secondary ball-handling for bench units and some semblance of spacing off the ball.
The No. 27 overall pick in 2004 has achieved moderate success in his eight seasons, averaging 5.6 points, 1.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists while knocking down 37.1 percent of his long-range looks and playing serviceable defense.
Antetokounmpo, meanwhile, has reportedly been given a partial guarantee, common for both training camp invites and young players with a legitimate chance of making the team. It's unclear which Antetokounmpo is at this point, but his agent has been clear his client doesn't fancy a third go-round in the D-League in 2015-16.
The older brother of burgeoning Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, Thanasis averaged 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals, and 1.7 blocks in 32.9 minutes with the Knicks' D-League affiliate in Westchester last season.
The Knicks should be swinging for upside at the end of their roster, to be sure, but Antetokounmpo hasn't yet definitively shown he belongs at the NBA level. He'll be one of the more interesting names to keep an eye on during the preseason.
