West Brom rejects bid from Tottenham for Saido Berahino
An improved offer from Tottenham might not be enough to lure Saido Berahino away from West Bromwich Albion.
West Brom rejected a bid from the north London side, the club confirmed Tuesday. Although it didn't disclose the details of the offer, it is believed Tottenham submitted a bid worth £18 million, according to Sky Sports.
The team's chairman, Jeremy Peace, said he refuses to sell the English forward despite Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy's approach.
"We have no interest in selling Saido which is what I have told Daniel Levy," Peace said.
"I know we are living in an age where no club can say 'never' about the possibility of selling a player.
"However, the prospect of selling Saido is simply not on our agenda."
Teams rarely release official statements on such matters, especially when it comes to naming a league rival and its chairman.
It's also the second time West Brom has remarked on interest in the forward. The club denied it had received a bid from an unknown team in July, calling speculation "silly."
Tottenham's bid follows the departure of a handful of players from White Hart Lane, including forward Roberto Soldado, whose miserable stint in north London concluded with a transfer to Villarreal.
Spurs, however, will have to look elsewhere for a talented striker, as Peace indicated West Brom will continue the season with Berahino.
"We are going forward with Saido very much in our plans and still striving to add players to improve the balance of our squad."
Berahino burst onto the scene last season with an impressive performance that saw him find the back of the net on 14 occasions.
