Maria Sharapova withdraws from US Open with leg injury

Five-time major champion Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the 2015 US Open due to a right leg injury.

"Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this year's US Open," Sharapova said on Facebook on Sunday. "I have done everything possible to be ready but it was not enough time. To my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong."

Sharapova hasn't played since being knocked out of Wimbledon in the semifinals against eventual champion Serena Williams. She cited a right leg strain as the reason for withdrawing from recent hardcourt events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

She was seeded third for the tournament, and could have met Williams in the semis of a second consecutive Grand Slam if healthy. She won her only US Open title in 2006, defeating Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final.

Fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina will take Sharapova's spot in the draw.
