Emmanuel Adebayor needs sign from God to leave Tottenham

Emmanuel Adebayor remains a Tottenham player after turning down several moves and a severance package.

Matt Law of the Telegraph reveals that the 31-year-old striker refused to leave Spurs, even though they were willing to allow him to join the club of his choice as a free agent.

Adebayor was ready to terminate his contract on Tuesday, with Spurs prepared to pay a portion of his £100,000-a-week wages. He could have then joined West Ham, but he changed his mind at the last minute.

Prior to that, at the end of July, Adebayor had the opportunity to join Aston Villa, going as far as posing in the club’s shirt. But he pulled out of that deal, too, reportedly claiming he wanted a sign from God.

It never came, and he ultimately decided against the transfer after seeking counsel from a pastor.

Adebayor last played for Tottenham as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Manchester City at the end of last season. He has not been issued a squad number this season, only training with the under-21 squad.

He could potentially see out the rest of his contract and collect the £5 million he is owed.
