Holiday expected to be cleared for Pelicans' camp, Pondexter isn't
Jrue Holiday has made enough progress after surgery on his right leg that he's expected to be cleared for training camp, New Orleans Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said Friday.
The news is not as positive for swingman Quincy Pondexter. He may not be ready for action until November, after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in May.
Starting point guard Holiday has missed a total of 90 games over the past two seasons, in large part due to a recurring stress reaction in his right leg. He underwent surgery in May to remove a screw from the leg, and while he will be ready for training camp, Gentry said he'll limit the 25-year-old in practice.
''We're going to monitor obviously his practices," Gentry told NOLA.com's John Reid. "I doubt there will be a situation where we'll let him go two-a-days. It just doesn't make sense right now.''
Last week, it was reported Gentry will likely keep Holiday on a minutes restriction at the start of the season.
As for Pondexter, Gentry is prepared to take it slow with the 27-year-old, who was acquired from the Memphis Grizzlies last season.
"He's going to do very little in training camp," Gentry said. "He'll start to get himself into a situation where hopefully November or somewhere in that he will be able to come back."
The Pelicans open training Sept. 29 at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, once the site of a Cold War government bunker.
