Report: RG3 likely to remain Redskins' No. 3 QB; practiced as scout team safety
Robert Griffin III may not be moving up the Washington Redskins' quarterback depth chart any time soon.
Adding to a Saturday report that he would enter the season as the No. 3 quarterback behind Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy, Griffin is likely to remain in that spot going forward, according to Jeff Darlington of NFL Media.
In line with these reports, Griffin was among the Redskins' inactives for their Week 1 game against the Miami Dolphins.
The decision to bury Griffin on the depth chart appears to be directly related to the fact that his $16.1-million 2016 contract option is guaranteed for injury.
"After further consideration the team is more likely to keep Griffin as the third quarterback because of the financial repercussions that they would face if Griffin were to enter a game and be injured," Darlington said in an appearance on NFL Network.
With the team seemingly intent to keep their 2012 first-round pick off the field, unwilling to risk taking on his sizeable contract for next season, it would no longer be surprising to see the club part ways with him at some point in the weeks ahead.
Darlington reported Sunday that Griffin spent time working as the scout team safety during the Redskins' week of practice, providing yet another indication the former rookie sensation has fallen completely out of favor in Washington.
Griffin struggled to hold his starting job in the two years that followed his electrifying rookie season, and the constant uncertainty surrounding his status has created the kind of distraction that teams are rarely willing to put up with for a third-string quarterback.
