DFS: What is James Jones' Value Moving Forward?
Aaron Rodgers will forever love James Jones and so should you.
Before the Green Bay Packers signed the 31-year-old wide receiver on September 6, he was considered washed up. The Oakland Raiders released him from a three-year contract in May and he couldn't break camp with the New York Giants, who signed him at the end of July.
Week 1 changed everything, as Jones has four catches for 51 yards and a pair of touchdowns in his return to Green Bay. Considering neither the Raiders nor the Giants featured a wide receiver who reached the end zone in Week 1, perhaps they judged him incorrectly.
Perhaps everyone did. Everyone but the Packers, that is.
Jones, despite being released, set career highs in targets and receptions in 2014. He led the Raiders in receptions and receiving touchdowns. He was the most consistent weapon for rookie quarterback Derek Carr.
Aaron Rodgers is not Derek Carr. With the injury to Jordy Nelson, prognosticators were drooling over Davante Adams while bumping up the values of Ty Montgomery and Jeff Janis. The latter two were looking like excellent GPP plays heading into the season.
Jones changes all that. Adams still led the Packers in receiving yards in Week 1, but he was also the target receiver on four of Rodgers' five incompletions. Jones' familiarity with Rodgers and the Packers will make the receiving corps more interesting for DFS players.
Year | Targets | Receptions | Yards | TDs |
---|---|---|---|---|
2011 | 55 | 38 | 635 | 7 |
2012 | 98 | 64 | 784 | 14 |
2013 | 93 | 59 | 817 | 3 |
2014 | 111 | 73 | 666 | 6 |
Jones never stopped being a viable option. He was the victim of being paired with an inexperienced quarterback and became expendable when Oakland wanted to get younger across the board.
Randall Cobb will still be the overall No. 1, and Adams will get his shots, too, but Jones is suddenly of keen interest, especially in GPPs.
He probably won't get the 14 touchdowns of 2012 or the 111 targets of last season, but he's another weapon for an elite quarterback and that adds real value.
Week 2 features a rough matchup against the vaunted Seahawks passing D, but Nick Foles just sniffed 300 passing yards against them. Jones is a risky play this week, but he's not the fantasy nobody he was perceived as heading into the season.
