DFS: Three NFLers with Job Security Issues
With Week 1 completed, it seems like the perfect time put some heads on the chopping block. Here are three guys who may be hearing footsteps heading into Week 2:
RB C.J. Anderson, Broncos
C.J. Anderson was a breakout back in 2014 but his Week 1 performance can be viewed as a significant setback. Anderson had 12 carries for 29 yards while backup Ronnie Hillman also received 12 carries for 41 yards.
The 12-12 split and low yardage total is unacceptable for Anderson, who was pegged as an RB1 - and was drafted as such.
After a sluggish but successful home opener, the Broncos immediately move on to face the Chiefs' stout defence on Thursday night - a situation that rarely yields high production. Due to the short week, it could also be expected that Denver continues splitting carries between Hillman and Anderson for injury and fatigue's sake, limiting Anderson's value in all formats.
Denver has a history of consistent running games regardless of who the ball carrier is, so how Gary Kubiak manages the caries could be the determining factor in the value of both Anderson and Hillman.
RB Isaiah Crowell, Browns
Similar to Anderson, Crowell only had 12 touches and was ineffective with them, totaling 20 yards. The Browns are operating a ‘by committee’ system as they did last year, with Duke Johnson Jr. replacing Terrance West.
This two-man system will ultimately breed competition between the two and it is possible one emerges as the leader depending on performance.
On Johnson's side is his solid Week 1 performance. Johnson picked up 22 yards on seven carries, good for a 3.3 YPC average that dwarfed Crowell's 1.6 YPC mark.
Working against Johnson is his rookie status, along with health issues he had in the preseason - including a hamstring pull and concussion. The shared disadvantage for Johnson and Crowell: playing for Cleveland.
At the moment, neither Crowell or Johnson are viable fantasy options but the committee situation in Cleveland is one to keep an eye on - and could land Johnson in a starting role if he continues to outperform Crowell.
QB Brian Hoyer, Houston Texans
The QB carousel in Houston never seems to end. In the preseason, Hoyer bested Ryan Mallett for the starting job; unfortunately for Hoyer, that role lasted about three-and-a-half quarters Sunday and may be over already.
In Week 1, Hoyer committed two turnovers - both of which were inside his own 20 and led to Kansas City touchdowns. With Kansas City up 27-6 with six minutes left, Texans head coach Bill O`Brien stopped the bleeding and benched the inept Hoyer in favour of Ryan Mallett; he went 8-for-13 for 98 yards and a TD in garbage time.
O'Brien has already said that he is unsure who his starting QB will be come Week 2 - and says fans will have to wait till Sunday to find out.
