DFS: Deal or No Deal - Disappointing Week 1 QBs
Four standout quarterbacks failed to perform at levels commensurate with their price tags in Week 1, so let's examine if they can redeem themselves starting this Sunday:
Eli Manning, Giants (vs. Atlanta)
Manning didn't exactly provide a positive early return on his recent contract extension, completing 20 of 36 passes for 193 yards and no TDs in what looked like a juicy matchup against Dallas. At least no fantasy points were deducted for failing to run down the clock late in the game...
Peyton's younger brother does have a good chance to rebound at home to an Atlanta team that allowed Sam Bradford to throw 52 times for 336 yards in his Eagles debut. Still, a potential worry is that if Odell Beckham Jr. is double-covered or shadowed by Atlanta's Desmond Trufant, Victor Cruz's anticipated absence denies Manning of an effective safety valve.
Manning may well rebound thanks to the matchup, but at his price point, Tony Romo, Bradford and Ben Roethlisberger represent safer fantasy choices.
Verdict: NO DEAL
Colin Kaepernick, 49ers (at Steelers)
Kaepernick put in a restrained performance against the Vikings, completing 17 of 26 passes for 165 yards with no touchdowns or turnovers while chipping in 41 rushing yards on seven carries. While effective in real life, handing off to Carlos Hyde provides no benefit to Kaepernick's DFS prospects.
The Steelers, particularly Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown, should provide a much stiffer test for the 49ers' revamped defence than the Vikings, forcing Kaepernick and the offense to open things up. Pittsburgh is historically known for having a dominant defense, but its current incarnation is happy to give back just as much as its offense can put on the board.
Kaepernick will be forced to used both his arm and his legs in what should involve San Francisco playing catchup; he'll provide an effective return on his price in Week 2.
Verdict: DEAL
Joe Flacco, Ravens (at Raiders)
A popular internet meme is to jokingly ask if Flacco is elite. Based solely on Week 1's performance, in which the former Super Bowl MVP went 18 for 32 for 117 yards and a pair of interceptions, the answer would be a resounding "no."
Considering the Raiders were down 33-0 by the end of the third quarter and allowed the similarly-maligned Andy Dalton to put up 269 yards and two TDs, Flacco couldn't have asked for a better matchup in which to rebound.
Flacco's price point sits around the same level as the unproven Teddy Bridgewater and Tyrod Taylor; he represents a strong candidate to produce a fantasy stat line expected of a much more expensive QB. For this week, anyway, Flacco will be elite.
Verdict: DEAL
Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins (at Jaguars)
Similar to Kaepernick, Tannehill put in a perfectly competent real-life performance, going 22 of 34 for 226 yards and one touchdown. As far as fantasy is concerned, however, the popular pre-season breakout candidate failed to deliver on the hype in Week 1.
Unfortunately for those considering giving Tannehill a second chance, the Jaguars aren't likely to threaten Miami's defense, allowing Tannehill and the offense to keep things conservative. Expect a low-scoring game with the Dolphins trying to better establish Lamar Miller. Quarterbacks around Tannehill's price point like Sam Bradford, Philip Rivers and Carson Palmer are likely to take to the air more often, making them better choices for Week 2.
Verdict: NO DEAL
