Arsenal legend David Seaman turned down Manchester United

After former Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson disclosed some deals that broke down for big players over his 26-year tenure, it turns out the club could also have had Arsenal's most decorated goalkeeper between the sticks.

Though Peter Schmeichel was Ferguson's undisputed number one at Old Trafford for eight seasons, it could have been David Seaman instead, the moustachioed shot-stopper of its long-running title rival.

"Before I went to Arsenal, I had the choice of Man United or Arsenal," Seaman told the Daily Star.

As a proud Yorkshireman, Seaman was initially at boyhood club Leeds United but, much to his dismay, he was unwanted by the Elland Road outfit. Spells at Peterborough United, Birmingham City, and Queens Park Rangers followed as he established himself as one of the finest young goalkeepers in Europe.

Despite being from the north of England, his family was settled in the English capital after four seasons with QPR.

"A little choice it was and I was living in London with my family and everything, so that's why I chose Arsenal."

Highbury heroes Tony Adams and Emmanuel Petit say that they too turned down moves to Stretford.

Seaman accumulated three league titles, four FA Cups, and the European Cup Winners' Cup at Arsenal, and also won 75 England caps.

Despite a brief spell at the end of his career where he took his dubious ponytail to Manchester City, Seaman spent the rest of his playing days in North London.

He would have been open to a move abroad, however.

"I'm sure that if there had been an opportunity I'd have tried it because I would have loved to have played in a different country."
