Mourinho given suspended 1-match ban, fined £50,000 for criticism of referees
The Football Association has handed Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho a one-match suspension and a £50,000 fine after he admitted that his comments following the Oct. 3 loss against Southampton constituted improper conduct.
He will not serve the ban unless he violates FA rules sometime within the next 12 months.
"Mr. Mourinho’s suspended stadium ban will be immediately invoked should he be found by an Independent Regulatory Commission to have committed a further breach of FA Rule E3 for any comment or statement to or through the media before 13 October 2016," a statement from the FA added.
Mourinho received the initial charge following the match. It was Chelsea's fourth loss of the Premier League season, and the Portuguese vehemently disagreed with the officiating afterwards.
"I’m not being offensive but I have to say it for my players and Chelsea supporters. Referees are afraid to give us decisions," Mourinho told Sky Sports following the match.
Mourinho's main issue with match official Robert Madley was his decision not to award a penalty with the score level at 1-1.
Mourinho also faced an investigation earlier in the season over his remarks toward former Chelsea physiotherapist Eva Carneiro, but he was eventually cleared by the FA.
