Pelicans waive Corey Webster, sign Bo McCalebb
The New Orleans Pelicans waived Corey Webster, the team announced Thursday.
Dropping the 26-year-old New Zealand native brings the Pelicans' roster down to 19, and the team will use the open roster spot to sign former NCAA standout Bo McCalebb.
Webster appeared in three preseason games, scoring four points and dishing six assists in 22 minutes. The Pelicans don't have an exclusive D-League affiliate, so his next destination is unclear. The 6-foot-2 Webster was signed in mid-September to provide additional guard depth, and the Pelicans continue to search for a potential third natural guard to keep on the roster.
McCalebb could fit the bill, as the 30-year-old has local ties and a strong track record of non-NBA success. It may be a little late into camp for McCalebb to make an impact, but Jrue Holiday is on a minutes limit and Norris Cole is injured, leaving the team perilously thin at the point.
McCalebb most recently played with Bayern Munich of the German league, averaging 12.4 points and 4.8 assists while hitting 38.2 percent of his threes. The NCAA's 24th all-time leading scorer also played in Turkey, Serbia, and Italy.
