Top 5 Manchester derby moments

Yet another edition of the famous Manchester derby is upon the football world, as Manchester United and Manchester City get set to battle in the 170th meeting between the rivals.

Sunday's game, as always, is an opportunity for one team to provide its fans with bragging rights until the next bout. But it also has important consequences as a win could see United reach the Premier League summit while City attempts to maintain top spot.

Here's a look a the top five Manchester derby moments:

Five-goal thumping marks City's successful return to top-flight football

The noisy neighbours sent a devastating message to United in 1989 with a thorough 5-1 thumping at Maine Road to mark the team's first derby win since winning promotion the season before.

Although it was a day to remember for the Citizens, the triumph over Sir Alex Ferguson's side would prove to be its last win in the Manchester derby for the next 13 years.

Keane-Haaland feud comes to dramatic conclusion

The feud between Roy Keane and Manchester City's Alf-Inge Haaland featured the type of venom that suggested one or the other was due for a serious injury.

Unfortunately for Haaland, it was him, as the retribution Keane sought against the defender in 2001 proved to be one of his last football matches in England when the United captain produced a despicable studs-up challenge.

Emotional derby match capped off by Benjani's winner

The second and final edition of the Manchester derby during the 2007-08 campaign was an emotional occasion in which football was an afterthought, as the city remembered the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster.

Both sets of fans were commended for the impeccable display of respect at Old Trafford to commemorate the 23 souls lost on that fateful day in Germany.

It wasn't, like the modern game, a team compiled of foreign players being remembered; Manchester was honouring several locals lost in the disaster, as well as the various others from Britain who never got to grow old.

A football match, however, had to be played, despite its importance taking a backseat to the gravity of the occasion.

It was the visitors who walked away with the victory after scoring two first-half goals, with Benjani Mwaruwari's header moments before halftime proving to be the game winner that snapped City's 34-year drought at Old Trafford.

Spectacular bicycle kick ends City's title dreams

In perhaps the most dramatic way to finish a Manchester derby, Wayne Rooney sent supporters at Old Trafford into an absolute frenzy when his stunning bicycle kick pierced the back of the net.

The goal secured three points for the hosts, bringing an end to City's hopes of challenging for the title as the gap between them increased to eight points after the affair.

City humiliates United en route to first title in over 40 years

A year after Rooney ended their hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy, City was finally able to call themselves Champions for the first time since 1968.

The most famous victory during their title-winning run occurred at Old Trafford when City inflicted a humiliating 6-1 beatdown on United, with Mario Balotelli showing off the iconic "Why Always Me?" shirt following one of his two goals.
