Newcastle defender Williamson joins Wolves on loan
Newcastle United central defender Mike Williamson is heading to Wolverhampton Wanderers until the end of November on a one-month loan, the club announced Thursday.
"With the injury problems we have at the back, we are delighted to have brought in an experienced player like Mike," Wolves manager Kenny Jackett told the club website. "Although he hasn't had much game time this season, he has been training all the time and is itching to get back into first team football and the opportunity at Wolves is a good one."
Williamson, 31, joins Wolves after falling down the pecking order at Newcastle, where he's made 171 appearances, scoring two goals. He has featured twice this season for the Magpies in the Capital One Cup, but has not played in a league fixture.
Another of Newcastle's defenders, Steven Taylor, has been ruled out for two months with a hamstring injury, now leaving the club with only two central defenders: Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba.
Williamson comes to a Wolves side looking for defensive reinforcements - the former Premier League outfit currently sits 14th in the English Championship on the end of a three-game losing slide.
"Recognized experienced defenders have been at a premium so we are delighted to add Mike to the group and believe he complements the players that we have here. ... We are very pleased to have him at a time when defensively we have been leaking goals and have been short of defenders," Jackett said.
Williamson is expected to be available for Wolves' Saturday fixture against Birmingham City.
