Dainius Zubrus accepts tryout with Sharks
Dainius Zubrus is still not ready to hang up the skates.
The veteran forward has agreed to a tryout with the San Jose Sharks in the hopes of returning to the NHL, and believes he can still contribute.
"I have a bigger body that can get in on the forecheck, and I feel like my legs can get me there," Zubrus told Curtis Pashelka of the Mercury News. "I don’t feel slower. I feel I can create some turnovers, protect pucks and battle along the boards."
Following his release from a tryout with the St. Louis Blues, Zubrus said he received a call from Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer, who feels Zubrus could be a valuable piece of the club.
"He knows our system. He's a smart guy, he understands systems, so I don't see that as an issue," DeBoer said. "There are a lot of positives. When you're checking boxes, there are a lot of good boxes there. But there are a lot of other factors that go into it, too, and some of those are above the coaching level. So I’m happy he's here, excited to work with him this week, and we'll see where he fits."
The 37-year-old is expected to practice with the club over the next few days, after which the team will likely make a decision on his status.
Zubrus has not played in a game since last season, where he had four goals and 10 points with the New Jersey Devils. DeBoer served as head coach of the Devils until he was fired after 36 games.
