Sixers working on extension for head coach Brett Brown
The management structure of the Philadelphia 76ers underwent a significant change on Monday, but ownership is looking for stability on the sideline.
The Sixers have been in talks with head coach Brett Brown on a contract extension, managing owner Josh Harris said during Monday's press conference.
Brown has a year and a half left on his current deal that he signed in August 2013.
"This is where I want to be," Brown said prior to Monday's game against the San Antonio Spurs. "To go through what we have gone through in the first two years and first third of this season and to not be so passionate about seeing this through would be naive and not be true. I dream like everybody here of (Dario) Saric and (Joel) Embiid and draft picks and our current group (improving)."
It's unfair to judge Brown based on his abysmal record of 38-148 through parts of three seasons in Philadelphia. His job has been to shepherd a group of unwanted veterans and an endless parade of young players as part of general manager Sam Hinkie's aggressive rebuilding strategy.
Despite the losing, Brown has made a strong impression on the Sixers brass as well as those outside the organization, Wojnarowski writes. His poise during a tremendously trying situation, and his innovation with such a young roster has reflected well on Brown. Having extensive experience as an assistant coach of the Spurs also works in Brown's favor.
Losing Brown would also upset whatever continuity that the Sixers may have with their young players. The team brought in Jerry Colangelo to expedite the rebuilding process, but the Sixers are, and will still very much be in the process of rebuilding for at least another season as they look to dig themselves out from the league's basement.
Having Brown to guide them through only makes sense.
