Police report: Chapman allegedly fired gunshots, 'choked' girlfriend
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman was reportedly traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, but the deal could be on hold after explosive allegations regarding a domestic violence incident emerged.
Chapman fired eight gunshots in the garage of his Miami residence and allegedly "choked" his girlfriend back in October, according to a police report obtained by Yahoo Sports' Tim Brown and Jeff Passan.
Chapman admitted to police he fired the eight shots with a handgun - seven in his garage and another which passed through a window and into an open field - after his girlfriend "found something in his phone that she did not like." Chapman then allegedly responded violently to what he viewed as a violation of privacy by pushing his girlfriend up against a wall and then choking her.
Several different parties were present at the household at the time of the incident, including family members, friends, and Chapman's personal driver. No arrests stemmed from the Oct. 30 happenings, however, because of "conflicting stories and a lack of cooperation from all parties involved."
Police later took the case to Assistant State Attorney Marcie Zaccor, who determined there was "insufficient evidence to charge Mr. Chapman with simple battery" because there were no physical injuries.
Chapman's attorney, Jay Reisinger, issued the following brief statement:
"I reviewed the facts as they are stated, and I deny the facts on behalf of Aroldis."
Major League Baseball plans to launch a full investigation into the matter under its new domestic abuse policy. Chapman could be fined or suspended at the discretion of commissioner Rob Manfred.
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported shortly after the incident went public that Monday's proposed trade with the Dodgers is being held up because of MLB's pending investigation, while ESPN's Buster Olney said the completion of the deal is still up to the two teams.
Reds president of baseball operations Walt Jocketty declined to comment on Chapman while the investigation is ongoing, and said a deal is still possible with Los Angeles, but that it could take several weeks to complete it.
