Eagles fire head coach Chip Kelly
The Philadelphia Eagles announced the firing of head coach Chip Kelly on Tuesday.
Jeffrey Lurie, the Eagles chairman and CEO, released a statement on Kelly's departure:
"I have made a decision to release Chip Kelly this evening. I spent the last three seasons evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team. As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change.
"As we move forward, the search for a new head coach will begin and will be led by myself, Don Smolenski and Howie Roseman. To the extent that we are able, we will try to keep you informed as we go through this process.
"I am determined and excited to select a new coach to help us obtain our ultimate goal."
Kelly, Philadelphia's head coach for the past three seasons, was let go with one regular-season game remaining. Pat Shurmur was named interim head coach for Sunday against the New York Giants.
The Eagles' 2015 season has been a massive disappointment. At 6-9 and set to miss the playoffs for a second straight year, the Eagles felt it necessary to part ways with their once highly touted head coach.
After back-to-back 10-6 seasons, with one playoff appearance, Kelly was given complete control of football operations, acting as the team's general manager in everything but name.
However, some high-profile free agent mistakes - in particular the acquisition of running back DeMarco Murray - brought Kelly's future with the team into question.
The Eagles also announced they fired Ed Marynowitz, vice president of player personnel, who will be replaced by Tom Donahoe, former GM of the Buffalo Bills.
