Lions' Calvin Johnson contemplating retirement

One of the most dominant receivers to set foot on an NFL field is considering walking away from the game earlier than expected.

Amid recent speculation he could opt to retire instead of returning for a 10th season, Calvin Johnson released a statement Wednesday confirming he's weighing his options in that regard.

"Like many players at this stage of their career, I am currently evaluating options for my future," the Detroit Lions' star said. "I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future."

The Lions released a statement in tandem with Johnson's, acknowledging and expressing an understanding for the veteran's need to consider his future.

"We obviously have profound respect for Calvin and certainly understand and appreciate his decision to give proper thought and consideration to his football future."

Though the 30-year-old has proven more than capable of still playing at a high level, he's dealt with a number of injuries over the past several seasons.

Should he make the surprise decision to retire, it will only be a matter of time before he earns himself a place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Johnson sits 27th all-time with 11,619 receiving yards and 22nd with 83 touchdown catches. His most dominant season came in 2012, when he hauled in 122 receptions for an NFL-record 1,964 yards.
