Newcastle United have completed their second signing of the January transfer window with the capture of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City.
Ahead of their match against Manchester United on Tuesday, the club confirmed that the 23-year-old has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract.
"I'm very excited to be here. I'm so glad that it's finally done," Shelvey told the team's website.
"I drove up through the night to be here so it's been a manic 24 hours but it's all been worth it to come here and play for this great club."
Shelvey, along with the team's other signing, Henri Saivet, who joined the club from Bordeaux, will be unveiled to supporters before Newcastle's match against United at St. James' Park.
Although neither team disclosed the transfer fee, a report earlier in the day revealed that Newcastle paid £12 million to complete the transfer with Swansea.
The reported figure presents a healthy return on investment for the Welsh side after it reportedly paid Liverpool £5 million to procure his services in 2013.
Despite his positive debut season with The Swans, Shelvey found himself on the bench for much of the current campaign after he was criticised internally at the club for his performances in both matches and training sessions.
The situation at Newcastle, however, should present an environment where Shelvey will be given a chance to help the club climb out of the drop zone.
Newcastle currently occupies the last relegation spot after accumulating just 17 points in 20 matches.
