The 20-year-old, who is adept in both defence and midfield, signed a deal that will keep him at Deepdale until at least the end of the 2017-18 campaign.
He was recalled from a loan spell at Scottish Premiership outfit Motherwell just last week, despite the Scottish Premiership outfit looking to make his stay at Fir Park permanent. At the time of his recall manager Mark McGhee said: "We have been gazumped at the last minute by an English club who offered a package that we simply cannot compete with."
It turns out that club was the Championship's Preston.
"He is a very versatile player. He can play at right back, he can play on the right side of a three and he can play in midfield. He likes a tackle, has a lot of energy about him and has a good pedigree, because of where he is coming from," Preston boss Simon Grayson told the club website.
Grimshaw is expected to be drafted straight into the matchday squad for the visit of Brentford next Saturday.
