Report: Clete Blakeman to referee Super Bowl 50 despite coin toss incident

Raj Mehta / US PRESSWIRE

Referee Clete Blakeman, who presided over the bizarre non-flipping coin prior to overtime in the divisional-round game between the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers, will referee Super Bowl 50, FootballZebras.com reports and ESPN's Adam Schefter confirms.

Blakeman called an officiating audible and re-did the coin toss for Cardinals-Packers, a decision the NFL later said wasn't necessary but was justified as it was made in the name of fairness.

It's the first Super Bowl assignment for Blakeman, who moved to the NFL from college football in 2008 and became a referee in 2010.

Officials assigned to the Super Bowl must be ranked in the top tier in their profession.
