Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic announces retirement

Just over a decade after beginning his illustrious career with Manchester United, former captain Nemanja Vidic has decided to hang up his boots for good.

The Serbia international announced he is retiring from football following his departure from Inter Milan, where the two sides mutually agreed to terminate his contract earlier in the month.

Vidic, who did not appear in a match for the Italian side because of hernia and back injuries, confirmed his intentions to walk away from the game on United's website.

"The time has come for me to hang up my boots," he said. "The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll.

"I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big 'thank you' to the fans for their support over the years."

Vidic arrived at United from Spartak Moscow in Jan. 2006 and went on to capture a handful of Premier League trophies, including a Champions League crown.
