Fantasy Spotlight: Justin Upton
Throughout the month of March, theScore examines hitters who represent their team's most intriguing fantasy plays. This edition focuses on Detroit Tigers outfielder Justin Upton.
2015 in Review: 620 PA, .251/.336/.454, 85 R, 26 HR, 81 RBI, 19 SB
The Good: Upton finished just one stolen base shy of his third career 20/20 season in 2015. His 19 SBs were three more than his total from the past two seasons. He'll hit second for the Tigers, providing him the opportunity to drive in 2B Ian Kinsler while getting on base for 1B Miguel Cabrera.
The Bad: Upton struggled desperately against lefties in 2015, hitting below .200; he hit .266 against right-handed pitching. It seems like an anomaly, as he fared better against southpaws in 2014, and he's favored them slightly over the duration of his career.
Best Comparison: Milwaukee Brewers OF Ryan Braun
What's in Store: The Tigers have the best roster of any team Upton's ever played for. Pitchers won't give him a free pass with Cabrera on deck, so he's likely to see his pitches. The steals will likely come back down, but 30 HR, 100 RBI, and 100 R are certainly in the cards.
Draft Outlook: Upton has the potential to be a top-10 outfielder in 2016, and he's being selected outside the top 15. He's played no fewer than 149 games in each of the past five seasons, providing the consistency necessary for a third-round selection in standard leagues.
