Fletcher becomes the second British Premier League player to move to Marseille on loan recently following Joey Barton's French sabbatical in 2012-13.
Looking to add depth to an attacking core led by Belgian international Michy Batshuayi, the 28-year-old English-born Scottish international has been brought in hours before the window slammed shut, according to the Cote D'Azur outfit.
Fletcher, who joined the Black Cats in 2012 following spells with Wolves and Burnley, scoring 23 goals for the Wearside club during that period.
Languishing on the bench behind Jermain Defoe and Fabio Borini, Fletcher has started 11 times for Sam Allardyce's lot this season, persuading his move to Ligue 1.
