Middlesbrough completes last-gasp deal for Blackburn's Jordan Rhodes

Middlesbrough has lent significant weight to its Premier League promotion charge, finally persuading Jordan Rhodes to join from Blackburn Rovers after the forward initially rejected Aitor Karanka's approach.

The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee, although reports suggest the transfer fee is in the region of £9 million.

That amount would make it the second-most expensive acquisition in club history, slotting between £12.8-million Afonso Alves and £8.15-million Massimo Maccarone in the list of pricey purchases.

Rhodes signed with Blackburn for £8 million from Huddersfield Town in 2012 and brings some impressive goal-scoring pedigree to Teesside. The Scotland international has scored 120 goals in 188 league starts since the beginning of the 2011-12 campaign.

In a cruel twist in the Championship fixture list, Middlesbrough's next match is against Blackburn on Feb. 6.
