Klopp laments Teixeira's failed transfer, promises moves in summer window
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says his team did everything it could to sign highly-touted Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Alex Teixeira, but the two parties could not agree to a transfer fee on deadline day.
The January window was Klopp's first chance at reinforcing his Liverpool side, but the Reds couldn't sign their primary target in Teixeira, despite him being vocally willing to make the switch.
"We made offers. I won't say too much about that, but they were realistic, absolutely," Klopp told reporters. "With the pluses of it being January, the Premier League, all the pluses you have when you make negotiations with other clubs. But it was a case of 'if you don’t want it, okay, we can’t change the situation, do what you want.'
"It’s important for now and for the future. It’s not that we haven’t got money or anything, but you have to work respectfully and responsibly."
Liverpool wasn't entirely quiet in the winter window, recalling a handful of players from loans, signing Marko Grujic from Red Star Belgrade, and bringing on Steven Caulker until the end of the season.
While Klopp believes the team isn't in pressing need for more reinforcements up top - he says he has enough forwards on the team, when everyone is fit - he also affirmed the club will be spending some cash this summer.
"We will do things, for sure, not in this transfer window, but we will do things," Klopp said. "It's not that you should buy and sell, buy and sell. In my opinion usually I make a one-year contract with the players. I know they have them for longer, but for me I say 'okay, yes, you are in my team and if you don’t play the biggest rubbish in your life, I will trust you, you have to trust me.'
"And after a year, we’ll look. Maybe he wants somewhere else, maybe I want him to go somewhere else. That’s football."
