Fantasy Spotlight: Carlos Gonzalez
Throughout the month of March, theScore examines hitters who represent their team's most intriguing fantasy plays. This edition focuses on Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez.
2015 in Review: 608 PA, .271/.325/.540, 87 R, 40 HR, 97 RBI, 2 SB
The Good: Gonzalez played in a career-high 153 games, and the result was 40 home runs, the most he has hit in eight seasons as a pro.
The Bad: Despite the home runs, the 30-year-old Gonzalez isn't the all-category stalwart he once was; he doesn't steal bases anymore, and his rate stats, while solid, were well below the norms he'd established from 2009 to 2013 - he never hit worse than .284 or reached base at a clip lower than .353 in that span.
Best Comparison: 2009 to 2013-era Josh Hamilton, a superstar in the prime of his career for whom injuries caused dramatic fluctuations in year-to-year production.
What's in Store: Solid power numbers are a near-lock due to Gonzalez playing half his games in Coors Field, and positive regression from his lower-than-average BABIP in both 2014 and 2015 could improve his batting average. As long as he can stay reasonably healthy, Gonzalez will be a capable producer in both power and counting stats.
Draft Outlook: His upside means he'll likely go within the draft's early rounds, but he's a risky selection due to his propensity to miss games. Drafting him expecting a repeat of last season's power display is misguided, given his recent history.
