Report: NBA owners to discuss adding corporate logos to jerseys
NBA uniforms might look slightly different in the coming years.
Team owners are expected to gather for a meeting during All-Star weekend to discuss the possibility of adding small corporate logos to uniforms, ESPN's Darren Rovell and Brian Windhorst report, citing sources.
The NBA's planning committee is apparently hoping to gather momentum from the meeting ahead of a Board of Governors meeting in April.
The reported proposal would allow teams to put one corporate logo on a 2 1/2-inch by 2 1/2-inch spot on the left shoulder of team jerseys. That would be similar to the size and placement of the KIA ad on this year's All-Star Game jerseys. Teams would be able to sell that space starting with the 2017-18 season.
In 2011, then-deputy commissioner Adam Silver noted that selling ads would bring in $100 million per year in revenue. Given the league's expanding viewership, implementation in 2017 and onward would likely draw a similar revenue figure, if not higher.
Revenue would be split 50-50, with half kept by the team, and the other half going into a revenue-sharing pot. Players would receive a share of the revenue, as sponsorship funds would be factored into Basketball Related Income, which is further factored into the salary cap.
The reported proposal would have to be approved by the Board of Governors in April.
