Report: Cavs, Knicks, Celtics discussed megadeal that would send Carmelo to Cleveland
The Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, and New York Knicks have discussed a three-team trade that would land Carmelo Anthony in Cleveland, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News.
The Celtics and Cavaliers reportedly talked about a Kevin Love trade and had "very preliminary discussions" about involving the Knicks and Anthony as well, according to Isola. Love would reportedly go to Boston in the potential deal, with New York believed to get Timofey Mozgov and draft picks in the trade and the Cavaliers receiving Anthony.
Isola reports that talks have not progressed, and Anthony would have to waive his no-trade clause if the megadeal were to occur.
Anthony alluded to his desire to play with a superstar talent on Friday afternoon.
"I think everybody kind of dreams and hopes that they can play with another great player, another star player. It's a star player's league," Anthony said. "I think that's what we talk about when we all get together - 'I want to play with you, I want to play with you.' Even here different guys say, 'Come play with me, come play with me.' So that's always the mindset. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it don't. But I think everybody that's in my situation, that's in my position, they all want the load off, especially the older they get. Because you realize you just can't do it all by yourself. Everybody knows that."
Anthony would only add to Cleveland's fourth-ranked offense, with the Syracuse product averaging 25 points throughout his 13-year NBA career.
The Cavaliers currently rank first in the Eastern Conference at 38-14. If they pursue the version of the deal that doesn't involve the Knicks, they'd likely look for some veteran help in return for Love.
