Fantasy Spotlight: Brett Lawrie
Throughout the month of March, theScore examines hitters who represent their team's most intriguing fantasy plays. This edition focuses on Chicago White Sox second baseman/third baseman Brett Lawrie.
2015 in Review: 602 PA, .260/.299/.407, 64 R, 16 HR, 60 RBI, 5 SB
The Good: Lawrie hit .293 against left-handed pitching in 2015, well ahead of his .247 average vs. righties. He played in a career-high 149 games with Oakland, suggesting he has perhaps shed his injury-prone reputation. He has gap power with mild HR potential (20 doubles, 16 HR in 2015).
The Bad: Lawrie struck out 23.9% of the time in 2015, while only walking at a 4.7% clip. His .320 BABIP was his highest ever over a full season, suggesting his .260 batting average may have been higher than it should have been. He doesn't steal bases and remains an injury risk until he can prove otherwise.
Best Comparison: Detroit Tigers 3B/OF Nick Castellanos
What's in Store: If he stays healthy, something similar to his 2015 numbers. He could see a slight boost in power, since U.S. Cellular Field is more homer-friendly than O.co Coliseum. Expect a lower batting average. The White Sox are improved on offense, so he will find himself in more RBI spots.
Draft Outlook: Lawrie can be had quite late in standard 12-team leagues and may even go undrafted. His multi-position eligibility makes him more intriguing in AL-only leagues, where he will go somewhere between rounds 10 and 12. He's a depth play at his position with slight upside based on past pedigree.
