Fantasy Spotlight: Daniel Murphy
Throughout the month of March, theScore examines hitters who represent their team's most intriguing fantasy plays. This edition focuses on Washington Nationals infielder Daniel Murphy.
2015 in Review: 538 PA, .281/.322/.449, 56 R, 14 HR, 73 RBI, 2 SB
The Good: Murphy has a career batting average of .288. He struck out only 7.1% of the time in 2015. Despite registering a career-low .278 BABIP, he still hit .281. He has some positional versatility, making him a decent fill-in bench pick at various infield spots. Hitting behind Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman should also provide him with ample RBI opportunities.
The Bad: He doesn't walk or hit for much power, and his speed has all but eroded. He stole 23 bases in 2013, 13 in 2014, and a mere two in 2015. Other than his solid batting average projections, he doesn't do much else to sate fantasy owners' appetites.
Best Comparison: Chicago Cubs 2B/OF Ben Zobrist
What's in Store: Do not draft Murphy expecting him to repeat his postseason insanity from 2015. The seven homers he hit between the NLDS and NLCS were half as many as he had in 538 regular season plate appearances. Instead, look for 10 home runs and limited speed. Do not roll with him as your primary second baseman.
Draft Outlook: Murphy is going between the 12th and 15th rounds in mixed leagues, and that sounds about right. If you need depth at this point in your draft, or somehow haven't taken a second baseman yet, take him. Otherwise, hold off. If he drops past the 15th round, that's when you'll get value.
