Report: Maple Leafs expected to host Red Wings, Jets to host Oilers outdoors
It appears as though there will be a pair of outdoor games in Canada next season.
The Winnipeg Jets will host the first outdoor game of 2016-17 against the Edmonton Oilers in October, reports Sportsnet's John Shannon.
The game will be held at Investors Group Field, which is home to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are also likely to host a rematch of the 2014 Winter Classic - as part of their centennial celebration - on New Year's Day, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported during Hockey Night in Canada's "Headlines" segment Saturday night.
"We are still expecting Toronto on January 1st with the Detroit Red Wings as the opponent. They had a tremendously successful outdoor game a couple of years ago in Ann Arbor," Friedman said.
The Maple Leafs defeated the Red Wings 3-2 on New Year's Day at Michigan Stadium in 2014.
The St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly lined up for the 2017 Winter Classic, while the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers are expected to play in an outdoor game next year as well.
