Fantasy Spotlight: Devin Mesoraco
Throughout the month of March, theScore examines hitters who represent their team's most intriguing fantasy plays. This edition focuses on Cincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco.
2015 in Review: 51 PA, .178/.275/.244, 2 R, 0 HR, 2 RBI, 1 SB
The Good: Absolutely no positives can be gleaned from Mesoraco's 23-game, injury-shortened season.
The Bad: After a 2014 that included 25 home runs, 80 RBI and strong rate stats, Mesoraco never got on a chance to build on his breakout performance, with hip pain relegating him to pinch-hitting duties before he ultimately opted for season-ending surgery. With only 51 plate appearances, his season was essentially a write-off.
Best Comparison: New York Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud
What's in Store: With no DH in the National League, Mesoraco is limited to catching or pinch-hitting. If he's pain-free, he should be back behind the plate, but considering he's never played more than 114 games in a single season, expectations of a heavy workload should be tempered.
The 27-year-old is just a year removed from leading all catchers in home runs, and has a lot of upside at a weak offensive position, especially in NL-only leagues. Even if he stays healthy, he has some risk in regard to rate stats, as 2014 was the only season of his young career where his batting average and OBP topped .238 and .288, respectively.
Draft Outlook: In mixed leagues, Mesoraco will be selected in the later rounds, but perhaps earlier if positive news regarding his ability to catch circulates throughout spring training. As long as he's not being drafted as a primary catcher, Mesoraco represents a lottery ticket that could easily pay off.
